Salt (NaCl) consist of sodium chloride. Chloride found in salt is the same chloride secreted in the stomach (chloride in hydrochloric acid, which is essential for the digestion of food). Thus, take a little pinch of salt before eating allows the body to produce enough hydrochloric acid to digest food. Most of the negative effects of salt as espoused in the world are caused by excess of sodium, not chloride.
